A Nine Year-Old Aviator is an original story by Raul Ruiz that was found in a trunk by his wife Valeria Sarmiento. It has never been published before. Written in Paris when he had just fled Chile, this tale is one of a series of stories written in the 1970s for Valeria Sarmiento. As they were both living in exile and he did not have work while his wife was childminding to provide for them both, he used to present her with a different story every day to read to the child she was looking after.

This story is illustrated by Camila Mora-Scheihing to whom this tale was read as a child.

Biographie

Raoul Ruiz (1941-2011) was a filmmaker, a playwright and a writer. Born in Chile and politically engaged, he was first a key figure of the new Latin-American cinema. Forced into exile after Pinochet's military coup in 1973, after settling in France he made more than 100 films, creating a major oeuvre in 20th century world cinema. He is also the author of fictions and theoretical essays that have been published by Éditions Dis Voir in the Cinema Fictions collection, his work launching it.
