A tour of remembrance
the Somme during the First World War
Quatrième de couverture
This monograph looks back over the history of the Somme during the First World War. The Franco-British offensive launched in the Somme in 1916 was extremely costly in terms of human lives and Great Britain and its Commonwealth allies paid a heavy price. From 1916 onwards, some thirty-five nationalities fought in the region and a new weapon - the tank - made its first appearance on the battlefield. War memorials, cemeteries, museums and martyred towns (such as Albert and Péronnne) all testify to the fierceness of the battles, the suffering of men and the international aspect of the First World War.
