1985-2003
Quatrième de couverture
Fustat I
The volume presents for the first time the complete ensemble of bone and ivory carvings acquired from excavations of the Institut français d'archéologie orientale in Cairo, carried out in Fustat between 1985 and 2003. The book presents detailed catalogue of 477 of the most representative objects carved in the round and in relief, and chapters containing synthetical conclusions which derived from their description and interpretation based on broad research of analogous pieces, Each object is presented in textual and pictorial form (71 plates of drawings, 53 plates with colour photos, and 9 figures with 50 objects). The text is supplied by index, concordances, bibliography, glossary, lists of drawings and photos, Individual items, types and groups of objects are analyzed and receive extensive comparative studies on a broad background from Egypt and neighboring countries.
The most important is the selection and identification of such archaeological documents as off-cuts and numerous workshop refuse proving directly the existence of local school carvers at Fustat. Particularly valuable is the ivory off-cut which confirmed the import and division of ivory tusk on the spot, Such identification occurred for the first time at Fustat. Broad interdisciplinary studies lead the author to discovery of previously unknown sources of influences on identified school of bone carvers at Fustat. Aside from bone and ivory objects some horn, maritime and freshwater shell, ostrich eggshell and other objects unearthed on the side have been also recorded, The manifold uses of bone and other organic material is shown in numerous objects of everyday use intensely produced for a wide market. Great majority of them is datable to the Umayyad period. Meticulous method of research unable author to correct some erroneous theories on early Islamic bone carvings popularized in numerous catalogues through the last century.
It is the first and the most complete reference book on the very important category of objects from excavation at Fustat, contributing to the broadening our knowledge on decorative art, and carved in bone daily use items of the early Islamic period in Egypt.
