Offrant aujourd'hui au visiteur l'aspect d'une cité paisible reposant le long des deux rives de la Mayenne, Laval emprunte néanmoins à sa rivière, jadis cours d'eau tortueux dévalant les contreforts du massif armoricain, son caractère impétueux. Née au Moyen Âge d'un acte de rébellion perpétré par un seigneur en quête d'indépendance, la ville s'est toujours plu à défier toutes les formes d'autorité, d'abord celle des Plantagenêt puis plus tard celle des Anglais ou des révolutionnaires jacobins. Rebelle par nature, Laval cultive également volontiers une identité singulière. Entre ses murs ont grandi des personnages aux tempéraments détonnants tels le chirurgien Ambroise Paré, l'écrivain Alfred Jarry, le peintre Henri Rousseau ou le navigateur Alain Gerbault dont le génial héritage continue à hanter les rues pavées du centre historique, les grandes artères d'époque napoléonienne ou les quartiers contemporains de la périphérie.

Nowadays visitars will find a peaceful city resting along both sides of the Mayenne, and yet Laval draws its impulsive personality from the river, once a tortuous watercourse hurtling down the foothills of the Armorican massif.

The city emerged in the Middle Ages from an act of rebellion perpetrated by a lord on a quest for independence. It has always delighted in defying any form of authority, starting with the Plantagenets and later the English and the Jacobin revalutionaries.

Rebellious by nature, Laval also readily cultivates its unique identity. Extraordinary characters like surgeon Ambroise Paré, writer Alfred Jarry, painter Henri Rousseau and sailor Alain Gerboult were raised within its walls, their incredible heritage still haunting the historic quarter's cobbled streets, the grand arteries of the Napoleonic era and the contemporary neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city.
