La peinture ainsi comprise n'est plus la peinture. »

« If the painter's art came down to imitating the images he perceived by reproducing them on a screen, he would simply be performing a mechanical act in which the higher human faculties played no part. It would be an observed impression, with nothing added to it : unintelligent work. Painting, thus understood, is not painting. »
