The essayer

The Essayer est une collection d'écrits proposés par les students- lecteurices de l'Énsba Lyon, produits en dialogue avec The Serving Library durant l'année académique 2020/2021.

Initialement envisagée comme un atelier d'une semaine à la galerie Ravisius Textor à Nevers, puis reportée à cause de la pandémie, cette collaboration a évolué en un projet semestriel de lecture et écriture collective, en compagnie de l'éditeur Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey.

Prenant une sélection de bulletins et objets de la Serving Library comme point de départ, les participant·e·s ont initié une séquence d'opérations graphiques en guise de lecture active :

(L) Chaque participant-e choisit un bulletin et un objet de la collection, mettant les deux en dialogue afin de se familiariser et se plonger dans le corpus.

(E) Chacun/e prend des notes, qui prennent la forme de textes, images et divers fragments et documents.

(C) Ces notes sont ensuite envoyées par courrier à l'ensemble des participant·e·s, qui se trouvent, au moment de ce projet (durant la pandémie), physiquement loin les un·e·s des autres.

(T) Chacun·e, recevant les notes des autres participant-e-s, conçoit graphiquement une affiche résumant sa lecture personnelle, à l'aide des éléments fournis par les autres.

(U) Simultanément, chaque participant-e produit également un très-court-métrage qui est diffusé sur le compte Instagram de Ravisius Textor.

(R) Toutes ces expériences constituent un terreau propice à l'écriture individuelle d'un bulletin.

(E) Jonglant entre français et anglais durant toute la durée du projet, les participant·e·s décident que leurs bulletins seront bilingues.

(S) Les bulletins sont rassemblés dans le volume que vous tenez actuellement entre vos mains.

The Essayer is a collection of writings by student-readers from the Fine Arts School of Lyon produced in dialogue with The Serving Library during the academic year 2020/2021.

Initially designed as a one-week workshop at the Ravisius Textor gallery in Nevers (France), then postponed because of the pandemic, this collaboration evolved Into a semester-long project of collective reading and writing together with TSL editor Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey.

Taking a selection of Serving Library bulletins and objects as starting points, the participants engaged in a sequence of operations as an active reading :

(R) Each participant chose a bulletin and an object from the collection, putting the two in dialogue, as a way to dive into the Library.

(A) Each took notes, which took shape as texts, images and various fragments and documents.

(V) The resulting notes were then mailed to all the participants, who were, at that time, far from one another, in different locations, due to the pandemic.

(I) Receiving all of the other participants' notes, each participant engaged in designing a poster that would sum up their personal reading, using the elements provided by the others.

(S) Simultaneously, each participant also produced a very short film-teaser, which was broadcast on Ravisius Textor's Instagram account.

(I) All of these experiences paved the way for each participant to write a bulletin of their own.

(U) Juggling between French and English during this project, the participants decided their bulletins would be bilingual.

(S) The participant's bulletins are assembled in the volume you are currently holding in your hands.
