Quatrième de couverture

Here, this The Original Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore goes back to the whole original 157 poems. Attempts to put these into English have recently been undertaken. But here, for the first time, is now the translation by an internationally renowned Bengali linguist and a Tagore specialist - a native poet-author, rendering the deep beauty of rhythm and sound of the Bengali language. In this milestone translation we find the authentic singing that Tagore lay before the world.

Biographie

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) won the Nobel Prize in literature 1913 for his English prose-poetry Gitanjali: Song Offerings (1912) and was the first Nobel awardee from the Far East. That compilation was based on one third of the original Bengali Gitanjali from 1910.

Udaya Narayana Singh, professor of linguistics, poet and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Visva-Bharati University, founded by Tagore, provides an insight into where these poems are rooted and in his in-depth analysis preceding his translation, shows a Tagore "non-Occidentalised" - but so much more a universal poet.
